A scramble — also known as Ambrose in Australia and New Zealand — is a team format where everyone tees off, you pick the best shot, and play your next shot from there. Repeat until the ball drops. (That's different from best ball, where each player plays their own ball and only the lowest score counts.) Less pressure, more banter, and the handicapper finally has a chance.
How scoring works
- 1Everyone tees off. The team picks the best drive and all players move their balls there.
- 2Repeat each shot. Everyone hits, the best ball is chosen, and play continues until it's holed.
- 3Record one team score per hole. Ambrose events apply a fractional handicap (often 1/4 or 1/8 of the combined team handicap) to a gross total.
- 4Lowest net total wins. Simple in theory — chaos to keep track of on a paper card.
